Type Dangerous“: Mariah Carey’s Electrifying Return with a Bold New Anthem

Type Dangerous,” the electrifying lead single from Mariah Carey’s eagerly awaited sixteenth studio album, made its resounding debut on June 6, 2025, via Gamma.

This track signals Carey’s first new solo material since “In the Mix” in 2019, and her first significant non-seasonal solo single in nearly a decade, reigniting fervent anticipation among her global fanbase.

The song seamlessly blends hip-hop soul and R&B with subtle elements of classic soul, pop, and a touch of new jack swing, creating a rich, multi-layered sonic experience.

It notably incorporates a sophisticated sample from Eric B. & Rakim’s iconic 1986 classic, “Eric B. Is President,” grounding its contemporary sound in timeless influences.

Co-written and co-produced by Mariah Carey herself alongside Anderson .Paak, NWi, and Daniel Moore, “Type Dangerous” delves into the allure of attraction to an enigmatic, “dangerous” type, articulated through playful, confident lyrics and delivered with a distinctly sassy inflection.

The accompanying music video, skillfully directed by Joseph Kahn and released on June 14, 2025, features bold, dynamic visuals that perfectly complement the song’s energetic and self-assured vibe.

Carey actively teased the single on social media, further fueling the excitement. “Type Dangerous” debuted at an impressive No. 95 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking Carey’s 50th career entry on that chart and her first non-seasonal solo Hot 100 hit since 2015’s “Infinity.”

It also secured a debut at No. 47 on Radio Songs and an impressive No. 7 on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, representing her highest R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay debut in almost three decades.

Carey further amplified the song’s presence with a commanding performance at the 2025 BET Awards, where she was also honored with the prestigious Ultimate Icon Award.

This single clearly heralds a fresh creative chapter for Carey, elegantly weaving nostalgic hip-hop influences with her signature vocal range and a modern R&B production.

Quotable Lyrics:

I came in the door, dripped in Balenci’
Cropped leather coat and some nine inch Fendis
The crowd opened up and I started to strut
I need my space, but I’m signing autographs and such

Hit the little girls’ room to powder my nose
Then came in three hatin’ a** h*es
They don’t know the meaning of water nor soap
I don’t have time for the rigamarole

Taking off my coat, clearing my throat
Certified diamonds like the songs I wrote
Look at my wrist, check out the light show

Can you handle this? I don’t know

You can meet me up at the pent’
Knock ’em out the box with a chocolate kiss
Hope I ain’t sayin’ too much
I like ’em dangerous
