“Old Town Road” Comeback on “Google’s Top Hummed Songs”
For those who’ve seen the television commercial for Google’s “Hum to Search” feature, it would be no surprise if “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyruswas stuck in their heads for the rest of the day. After the number one hit was featured in that commercial, its popularity grew once again. Although it has already broken the record for spending the most weeks atop of the Billboard Hot 100 after its debut, the song has made a chart-topping comeback on the new Billboard Chart Google’s Top Hummed Songs 2020.
After “Hum to Search” was released in Oct. 2020, its popularity was more significant than expected. The top hummed songs chart includes one hundred songs that have become popular at different times for different reasons. For example, the 1987 hit “Never Gonne Give You Up” by Rick Astley was famous during its original release, but it grew in popularity amongst younger generations due to the favorite “Rickrolling” prank and internet meme that revitalized his performance career. Today, it is still as popular, with it now being the number two spot on the top hummed chart.
