Gorillaz’sDemon Days Live” at the Apollo: Star-Studded Spectacle, Visual Innovation, and a Harlem Happening

A legendary night echoes through the annals of music history, a vibrant tapestry of sound and vision woven by the singular artistry of Gorillaz.

Demon Days Live” from Harlem’s Apollo Theater, a spectacle captured in April 2006, showcased the band’s groundbreaking second album in its entirety, a testament to their genre-bending brilliance.

Imagine, if you will, the energy that pulsed through the iconic venue, part of Gorillaz’s limited “Demon Days Live” tour, a select series of performances that graced both Manchester and Harlem.

The Apollo residency, a five-night immersion into the “Demon Days” universe, reached its zenith with a performance brimming with star power.

De La Soul ignited the crowd with the infectious energy of “Feel Good Inc.,” their presence electrifying. Shaun Ryder and Rosie Wilson brought “DARE” to vivid life, their combined vocals a potent force.

The legendary Dennis Hopper lent his gravitas to the narration of “Fire Coming Out of the Monkey’s Head,” his spoken words adding a layer of profound storytelling.

The stage became a melting pot of talent, featuring appearances by Neneh Cherry, Bootie Brown, Ike Turner, Roots Manuva, Martina Topley-Bird, and the soaring voices of the Harlem Gospel Choir.

The visual landscape, crafted by the visionary Jamie Hewlett, transcended mere backdrop. Puppets of 2D and Murdoc, mischievous and alive, interacted with the audience from the balcony, blurring the lines between animation and reality.

A full live band, performing in silhouette against illuminated panels, marked a departure from the band’s earlier enigmatic setup, revealing the human element behind the cartoon facade.

Tracks like “Kids with Guns,” “Dirty Harry,” “El Mañana,” and “Demon Days” unfolded with theatrical flair, each song a mini-narrative brought to life.

The encore offered further sonic treasures, “Hong Kong” featuring the delicate strains of Zeng Zhen’s guzheng, and a poignant appearance by Ibrahim Ferrer via footage for “Latin Simone (¿Qué Pasa Contigo?).”

The sheer scale of the production, a 25-piece band including strings, choirs, and percussionists, created an immersive experience that enveloped the audience.

This iconic performance, a blend of music, art, and storytelling, continues to captivate. A recording of this electrifying Apollo show will see a limited-edition double red vinyl release for Record Store Day 2025 on April 12th, marking the 20th anniversary of “Demon Days,” a tangible piece of music history.

While the Manchester residency received its Grammy-nominated DVD release, many devotees consider the Apollo performance an even more potent and unforgettable event, a true testament to Gorillaz’s enduring legacy.

Quotable Lyrics:

In these demon days, we’re so cold inside
It’s so hard for a good soul to survive
You can’t even trust the air you breathe
‘Cause Mother Earth want us all to leave
When lies become reality
You numb yourself with drugs and TV
Pick yourself up, it’s a brand new day
So turn yourself ’round
Don’t burn yourself, turn yourself
Turn yourself around to the sun

In these demon days, we’re so cold inside
It’s so hard for a good soul to survive
